On October 28, general contractor Milender White (MW) began work on phase one of Riverwalk,
one of the largest projects in company history.
Riverwalk, developed by Hines, will create an entirely new neighborhood along the San Diego
River, in the heart of Mission Valley along Friars Road. This transit-linked urban village will contain
apartments, retail stores, cafés and an iconic bridge. As development progresses, Hines will
enhance a portion of the adjacent San Diego River, gradually converting the Riverwalk Golf Club
into an 80-acre public park and restoring natural habitat in line with the city’s Mission Valley
Community Plan.
Phase one of Riverwalk includes 721 apartments in four concrete-and-wood-frame podium
buildings, plus a retail village – 1,748,667 gross square feet of construction. A new light rail station
is also planned to connect Riverwalk residents with downtown, the Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego
State University and other work and entertainment destinations.
Hines and MW anticipate completion of phase one in spring 2029. When all project phases are
completed in the 2030s, Riverwalk will have approximately 4,300 apartments, 1,000,000 sq. ft. of
office space, 152,000 sq. ft. of retail, and nearly 100 acres of public parks and trails.
