March 17th, 2023, Denver, Colorado
Starting yesterday, unhoused young adults and youth aging out of Denver’s Foster care system can envision a difference in their lives, their futures, and their housing opportunities.
Milender White (MW) broke ground on 2700 Wewatta with the synergistic efforts of a dedicated team – Rivet Development Partners LLC & Pennrose LLC, TGTHR, Shears Adkins Rockmore Architects – to build affordable housing in Denargo Market. Located just north of Coors Field in downtown Denver, this new residential community will provide 56 new affordable residential units to the RiNo neighborhood, with on-site, supportive services geared towards the needs of young adults experiencing homelessness. The community will provide an opportunity for this age group to move out of poverty and instability due to trauma and homelessness and into an adult life filled with support and the possibility for social enterprise and growth.
The project received Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTCs) provided by the State of Colorado. The design and preconstruction teams have been diligently planning together to alleviate construction challenges including tight site building, soil concerns, cost savings, and urgent affordable housing needs. All teams are excited to go vertical with this project with the goal of project completion to serve this vulnerable population in 2024.
The project will provide 56 one and two-bedroom units as well as common residential amenity spaces, a social enterprise retail space, and six surface parking stalls per Denver’s new urban parking requirements. When the project is complete TGTHR, a Boulder-based nonprofit will provide onsite support services for all residents including counseling, substance abuse recovery resources, and planning services for employment and coaching. 2700 Wewatta will help bridge the gap for these young people to have hope and a plan for their futures.
“Working with great partners is a core value of MW. By partnering with organizations aligned with our values we can provide high-quality affordable housing to communities throughout Denver. The entire 2700 Wewatta team has done outstanding, innovative work together for over a year to get this project to this groundbreaking. All partners are committed to our continued work together throughout construction and excited to share in the opening of Togethers first Denver location where they will truly improve the lives of so many young adults.” states Darren Hinton, MW Construction Executive and Senior Vice President.
