Milender White’s work on the Toolik Ecological Observatory on Alaska’s North Slope earned the company a first-place national Excellence in Construction (EIC) Eagle Award from Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) in the Other Construction/Under $10 Million category.
The company received the award last week during ABC’s 28th annual Excellence in Construction awards celebration in Long Beach, Calif. This marks Milender White’s fifth national EIC Eagle Award.
“Associated Builders and Contractors is proud to honor Milender White with a best-in-class Excellence in Construction Eagle Award for their tremendous work in completing the Toolik Ecological Observatory safely, on time and budget,” said 2018 ABC National Chair George R Nash Jr., director of preconstruction at Branch & Associates in Herndon, Va. “The dedication to innovation, productivity and world-class craftsmanship demonstrated by Milender White and its employees produced truly impressive results that any project owner would be proud of.”
The Toolik Ecological Observatory is a sophisticated ecological data-gathering facility more than 170 miles above the Arctic Circle on Alaska’s North Slope. Building the observatory on the desolate Arctic tundra during the dark winter and into the late summer months presented formidable challenges. During winter conditions, the job site was a 4-½-hour drive from a medical facility, if the road was passable. Calling 911 was not an option. The closest location to purchase equipment and supplies was 130 miles away, so it was imperative that items needed were accounted for and inventoried prior to mobilization.
“We are honored to receive this national EIC Award,” said Shane Fobes, Construction Executive at Milender White. “Our team faced the challenges of this project head on. The group took preparedness to another level, taking all necessary steps to ensure a safe and successful job.”
The Excellence in Construction awards program is the industry’s leading competition, developed to honor innovative and high-quality merit shop construction projects, with an Eagle Award presented to the top project in each category. The award honors all construction team members, including the contractor, owner, architect and engineer. The winning projects, selected from entries submitted from across the nation, were judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges overcome, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost.
