Milender White Helps to Build a Village for Homeless Veterans in L.A.

February 14, 2022, Los Angeles, CA

On Saturday, February 5, volunteers from construction firm Milender White (MW), Lennar Homes, and supportive housing provider HomeAid LA spent a rewarding day on the campus of the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center, assembling 32 tiny homes to shelter homeless veterans.

A construction crew of approximately 40 worked from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to assemble the shelters. They provide a durable, comfortable environment for homeless veterans, a first step on their journey toward permanent supportive housing.

This low-barrier-to-entry outreach effort presents these veterans with a safe, clean, designated living area, and adjacent tents for dining and security and social services. The VA provides ongoing medical and behavioral health and social services to the residents.

The site originally contained tents to help offer safe space to homeless vets during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has since evolved to shelters. The new units come with a bed and mattress, air conditioning and heating, fire life safety equipment and an electrical outlet. Homebuilder Lennar and developer FivePoint Communities made a $750,000 donation to HomeAid in 2021 which contributed greatly to HomeAid’s ability to provide these shelters.

Veterans who are homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness are strongly encouraged to contact the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at (877) 4AID-VET (877-424-3838) for assistance.
