Milender White (MW) has completed the new two- story, 38,000 SF National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) facility in Broomfield, Colorado. The construction project, fully funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), which is NCAR’s sponsor, included the demolition of an existing building and new construction of a research facility including offices, labs, chemical storage rooms, warehouse, loading dock, conference & reception areas, and other employee amenities. The Research Aviation Facility (RAF) project also included the minor renovation of two existing adjacent airplane hangars connected to the new building. Site development added surface parking and a courtyard for enhancing employee and visitor’s overall experience.
MW partnered with the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), which manages the facility on behalf of NSF, and TreanorHL, Iconergy, and Wember Inc. in the delivery of the new facility. RAF was an occupied building site, so project leaders worked with the challenge of constructing with minimal impact on operations and maximum safety considerations for occupants. Additionally, aviation operations continued throughout construction, which required flawless scheduling, logistics planning, and safety considerations for all active flights.
Now that it is complete, the new facility provides state-of-the-art research capabilities for researchers at universities and other organizations across the U.S. NCAR will use the new facility to manage two research aircraft – a Gulfstream V and a C-130 –that it operates on behalf of NSF. This new facility has transformed not only the landscape but the future of the atmospheric research process and opportunities for NSF, NCAR, UCAR, and their research partners.
