Milender White Goes to School and Gets Kids Excited About Construction Careers

November 5, 2021, Los Angeles, CA

“Mrs. Ahumada – I know what I want to be when I grow up! An engineer!”

That exclamation – and other exciting comments – could be heard at the end of Milender White‘s recent trip to Langdon Avenue Elementary School in North Hills. On November 4, our Mission Gateway project team put on two assemblies for more than 300 students at this LAUSD campus. Kids had fun learning about construction work, and they also learned how science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education opens the door to professional careers.

Langdon Avenue Elementary is just a short walk from the 356-unit Mission Gateway project site, and many of its students have been curious about the giant cranes and big buildings going up nearby – and the people working on them.

For some of the students, Mission Gateway was truly close to home. By a show of hands, the team learned that several dozen students had family or relatives working in the construction industry – and about 20 of those kids had family members or relatives who had actually worked on our project.

The kids saw a time-lapse video of construction and demolition, glimpsed how wood, steel and concrete are used in buildings, and saw the framing, plumbing and electrical components behind an interior wall. A diverse quintet of Milender White team members shared the message that no matter where you are from, what your gender, or what your educational path, there can be a place for you in construction – while also emphasizing that STEM education is a big step toward the most rewarding building industry careers.

Mission Gateway’s project team has done an excellent job keeping the students safe from the site’s construction activity and traffic, and communicating with Langdon Elementary and its staff. The 356-unit project is one of the largest affordable housing efforts being built in Southern California, and represents a design-build collaboration between Milender White, AC Martin, Power Design, 20/20 Plumbing & Heating and AMCO Fire Protection. Meta Housing, one of the Southland’s premier affordable housing developers, is the owner. Prospective residents are already joining Mission Gateway’s waitlist. The project is on pace to be fully complete at the start of 2023.
