Catherine Santa Monica Phase I

800 Colorado Ave.
Santa Monica, CA

Type: Multi-Unit Residential, Retail

Owner: Fifield

Architect: Michael W. Folonis Architects

Project Summary

The 90-unit first phase of Catherine Santa Monica, honored as an ENR 2021 Regional Best Project, and ENR 2021 Excellence in Sustainability Project, is not only an upscale market-rate apartment community but also an energy-efficient transit-oriented development.

This amenity-rich 77,758 sq. ft. building features a pool and sun deck, a screening room, yoga and Zen decks, a co-working area, and a generous lounge-entertainment space. Retail shops occupy part of the ground floor. Residents have easy access to public transit – they can catch the Metro E Line (Expo Line) at 4th Street and Colorado Avenue, and board the Big Blue Bus, Santa Monica’s rapid transit service, steps away. The transit-oriented community boasts a Walk Score of 93. In busy Santa Monica, the Catherine is an oasis of upscale tranquility, and part of the revitalization of the city’s downtown core.

Logistical planning was critical to the success of the project, located at Lincoln Boulevard (Highway 1) and Colorado Avenue along the Metro E Line. Construction is Type III-A podium with 2½ levels of below-grade parking; the building’s foundation utilizes the entire lot footprint. The Catherine is certified LEED Platinum, with rooftop solar, a renewable electricity generation system, and greywater re-use.

Preceding its ENR honor, Catherine Phase 1 was an ABC 2020 Excellence in Construction Award-Winner for the SoCal District.
