Project Summary

Catherine Santa Monica, honored as an ENR 2021 Regional Best Project, and ENR 2021 Excellence in Sustainability Project, is not only an upscale market-rate apartment community, but also an energy-efficient transit-oriented development. Construction is Type III-A modified with four stories of wood over one story of above-grade concrete and 2½ levels of below-grade parking. The 90 residential units include studios and one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments.

The 77,758 sq. ft. development features ground-floor retail space and amenities including a large pool and sun deck, a screening room and spacious lounge-entertainment space. Residents have easy access to public transit. They can catch the Metro E Line (Expo Line) at 4th Street and Colorado Avenue, and board the Big Blue Bus, Santa Monica’s rapid transit service, right in front of the building. The transit-oriented community boasts a Walk Score of 93.

Site logistical planning was critical to the success of the project, as construction occurred at Lincoln Boulevard (Highway 1) and Colorado Avenue along the Metro E Line. The building’s foundation utilizes the entire lot footprint. The Catherine is certified LEED Platinum. The project features rooftop solar, a renewable electricity generation system, and has greywater re-use.

Preceding its ENR honor, the Catherine Santa Monica was an ABC 2020 Excellence in Construction Award-Winner for the SoCal District.
