Oglala Sioux Radio Communication Tower

Oglala Sioux Reservation
Pine Ridge, South Dakota

Type: Utility & Infrastructure

Owner: Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety

Architect: Valmont Structures (Tower Engineer)

Project Summary

Milender White provided design-build services for a 200-ft. self-supporting radio communication tower on the Oglala Sioux reservation. To enable future antenna loading, the team designed an additional 30% reserve capacity into the tower and foundation. Because of the 90mph wind speed requirement and poor quality of the existing soils, the solution required special designs including a large pad/pier foundation and customized tower geometry.

The Oglala Sioux Tribe facilitated all inter-reservation communications over a 520mhz channel broadcast from an older tower located approximately 20 miles outside of Pine Ridge. The new tower holds the equipment for the 520 mhz channel to improve communications within the Pine Ridge limits. The tower also holds the new P25 compliant Motorola equipment used for statewide emergency communications.

Due to the tower’s adjacency to the Justice Center, Milender White installed a high-tech security system with active image recognition capabilities facilitating real-time visual surveillance of the equipment shelter and equipment base for 24/7 security.
