Project Summary

The National Center for Atmospheric Research’s Research Aviation Facility (RAF) is located at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport,10802 Airport Court, Broomfield, CO.

The construction project, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), includes the demolition of an existing building and new construction of a two-story 38,000 SF Type II-B building. The research facility includes offices, labs, chemical storage rooms, warehouse, loading dock, conference & reception areas, and other employee amenities. The RAF project also includes minor renovation of two existing adjacent airplane hangars connected to the new building. There is a site development component as well which includes surface parking, courtyard and misc. site improvements/repairs.

MW partners with the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), which manages the facility on behalf of NSF, and TreanorHL, Iconergy, and Wember Inc. in the delivery of the new facility. RAF is an occupied building site, so project leaders are meeting the challenge of constructing with minimal impact to operations and maximum safety considerations for occupants. Additionally, aviation operations will continue throughout construction, which requires flawless scheduling, logistics planning and safety considerations for all active flights.

When complete, the new facility will provide state-of-the art research capabilities for researchers across the U.S.
